Privacy Policy

This website (1010residents.org) and The Commons, the residents forum at commons.1010residents.org, are created and run by John Kiel, a resident of 1010 Lofts (Unit 430), referred to below as "the organizer." Neither is affiliated with building management in any way. This policy explains what information each one collects, who can see it, and how to have it removed.

The short version

Your information is never shared with building management, the property owner, or anyone working for them. It is never sold. There are no ads, analytics, or advertising trackers on either site. The few outside services involved are listed below, and each one handles your information only to do its job.

This website and the interest form

The interest form collects your name, email address, unit number, and your answers to the questions on the form. The phone number field is optional.

This information is used to coordinate with other interested residents: to follow up with you about the association and to gauge how many neighbors want to be involved.

Submitting the form sends two emails: a confirmation to you, letting you know it arrived, and a copy of your submission to the organizer. Both are delivered by Resend, an email service. The form sends no other email.

To keep spam bots out, the form uses Cloudflare Turnstile. It looks at technical details from your browser (such as your IP address and browser type) to tell people apart from bots. It is not used for advertising or to track you across other sites.

Email sent to any address at 1010residents.org is received by Resend and forwarded to the organizer's personal inbox.

The Commons (the residents forum)

The Commons is a private discussion forum for 1010 Lofts residents. It runs on Discourse, open source forum software, on a cloud server rented from Hetzner and managed by the organizer. It is not hosted by the Discourse company.

Who can join

Accounts are by invitation, and each one is approved by an administrator. Your unit number is requested at sign up to confirm that you live in the building.

What The Commons collects

When you have an account:

  • Account details: your username, email address, the name you choose to display (optional), your unit number, and your password, which is stored in scrambled (hashed) form so no one can read it, including administrators.
  • Your profile: anything you choose to add, such as a photo, a bio, or other profile fields.
  • What you post: topics, replies, chat messages, private messages, uploaded images and files, likes, bookmarks, and flags.
  • Technical and activity information: the IP address you signed up from and your most recent one, the browsers and devices you're logged in on, when you visit, and what you read. The forum uses this to keep your place in conversations, send notifications and summaries, protect accounts from misuse, and grant the automatic "trust levels" that unlock features over time.

The Commons uses cookies only to keep you logged in and to make the forum work. There are no advertising or tracking cookies.

Who can see what

  • Topics, replies, and chat channels can be read by other members of The Commons. Nothing on the forum is public to the internet or indexed by search engines.
  • Your unit number and email address are visible only to forum administrators, not to other members.
  • Private messages and chat direct messages are private from other members, but they are not end-to-end encrypted, and forum administrators can technically read them. Administrators do not read them except when someone reports a message or a problem needs investigating, but you should know it is possible.
  • Other members can see what you post and could copy or screenshot it. Please keep that in mind, and please don't share other residents' posts outside The Commons without their permission.

The organizer is currently the only administrator. Once the residents association is formally established, members will vote on its structure, including which positions have administrator or moderator access. If that changes who can see the information described here, this policy will be updated and the change announced on The Commons.

Email from The Commons

The Commons sends account emails (invitations, confirmations, password resets) and, depending on your settings, notifications and activity summaries. These are delivered by Resend. You can change or turn off notification and summary emails at any time in your account preferences.

Outside services

A few outside companies handle parts of how these sites work. Each one processes information only to provide its service.

  • Hetzner provides the cloud server The Commons runs on. Forum accounts, posts, and messages are stored on that server.
  • Cloudflare carries traffic to The Commons and to the server that receives form submissions, and runs Turnstile on the interest form. Forum uploads and backups are stored in Cloudflare R2, Cloudflare's storage service.
  • Resend delivers email from the interest form and The Commons, and receives mail sent to 1010residents.org addresses.
  • Netlify serves this website's pages through its content delivery network. It is not involved with The Commons.

What is never done with your information

Your information is not shared with building management, the property owner, or anyone else. The whole point of this association is that residents have a space to organize on their own terms.

The one exception is a legal requirement, such as a subpoena or court order. In that case, the organizer will push back where the law allows, share only what is strictly required, and notify anyone affected unless legally prohibited from doing so.

How long information is kept

Interest form submissions are kept until you ask for them to be removed or the association no longer needs them. Your Commons account and posts are kept until you ask for your account to be removed. Forum backups are kept for a limited time and then overwritten, so removed information can remain in a backup for a short while before it is gone for good.

How to be removed

To have your interest form information removed or your Commons account deleted, contact the organizer (see Contact below) and it will be taken care of promptly. For your Commons account, you can choose between two options:

  • Delete everything: your account and everything you posted are removed.
  • Anonymize: your name, email, unit number, and other personal details are erased, and your posts stay up under an anonymous name so conversations still make sense.

Either way, if another member quoted you in their own post, that quote stays part of their post.

Changes to this policy

If the way information is handled changes, this page and the date at the top will be updated. Significant changes will also be announced on The Commons.
