As of January 5, 2025,
Minn. Stat. § 504B.212
gives every renter in Minnesota the right to form a tenant association.
Your landlord cannot retaliate against you for organizing. That's the law.
How organizing works: five steps from HOME Line
Based on guidance from HOME Line,
Minnesota's leading tenant advocacy nonprofit.
-
Learn your rights
Figure out what management is actually required to do, and what your options are when things fall short.
-
Talk to neighbors
Find out if others are dealing with the same things. You might be surprised how much you have in common.
-
Pick a starting point
You don't have to solve everything at once. Settle on one clear ask, like getting better notice before building work starts.
-
Put it in writing
A letter from an organized group of residents carries a lot more weight than a single email.
-
Keep at it
If the first attempt doesn't land, the association has options. City council contacts, local press, further organizing. It doesn't have to end at one letter.
